Description
Anteriorly sectioned internal anatomy of the male encephalon is arranged around the ventricular system, with the paired lateral ventricles curving superiorly and laterally within each cerebral hemisphere. Medial to the ventricular bodies, the septum pellucidum and fornix form a thin midline partition and arch, while the corpus callosum roofs the ventricles and bridges right and left cerebrum. Inferior and medial, the interventricular foramina lead into the third ventricle, which sits in the midline between the thalami and continues posteriorly toward the cerebral aqueduct; deeper gray masses of the basal ganglia and internal capsule would be expected lateral to the third ventricle and anterolateral to the thalamus. Orientation is clear. This anterior perspective is the workhorse for teaching cerebrospinal fluid pathways and the relationships that matter in hydrocephalus. Obstruction at the interventricular foramen (foramen of Monro) or more distally at the cerebral aqueduct drives enlargement of the lateral ventricles, and the anatomic proximity of the fornix explains memory complaints after endoscopic third ventriculostomy or ventricular catheter manipulation. Midline landmarks also support safe planning for frontal horn external ventricular drain placement, where trajectory aims toward the ipsilateral foramen of Monro while avoiding the caudate nucleus and internal capsule. Use this plate in neuroanatomy and neuroradiology courses to pair gross anatomy with CT or MRI correlates of ventriculomegaly, septal variants, and periventricular CSF flow. It also fits neurosurgical teaching materials on ventricular access, shunt catheter positioning, and endoscopic navigation through the lateral ventricle into the third ventricle.
