Description
Arising from the male lumbar column, the L3 vertebra is presented from a posterior perspective with the laminae converging toward a blunt, quadrangular spinous process at the midline. Paired transverse processes extend laterally from the junction of pedicles and laminae, framing the vertebral arch and the vertebral foramen that lies anterior to the spinous process. Superior articular processes sit superoposteriorly, their facets oriented to engage L2, while the inferior articular processes project inferolaterally toward L4. Short and stout. Posterior morphology at L3 matters because this level often anchors both surface anatomy and operative planning in the mid-lumbar spine, where the interspinous and supraspinous ligaments, multifidus, and erector spinae attach directly to the spinous and transverse processes. Clinically, the relationship between the lamina and articular processes is central when teaching facet-mediated low back pain and when discussing pars interarticularis stress injuries, even though true spondylolysis is less common at L3 than at L5. The broad lumbar spinous process and sagittally oriented zygapophysial joints also help explain why lumbar extension and rotation load the facets differently than in the thoracic region.
