Description
Dorsally, the male foot is rendered with the phalanges, metatarsals, and tarsal bones forming the osseous framework beneath a superficial venous network. Along the lateral border, the lateral marginal vein courses proximally from the region of the fifth toe and lateral forefoot, tracking posterior to the base of the fifth metatarsal before turning toward the posterolateral ankle. Its trajectory aligns with the lateral aspect of the dorsal venous arch and continues toward the small (lesser) saphenous system as it approaches the lateral malleolar region. Clear surface anatomy. Tracing the lateral marginal vein matters when you need to relate dorsal foot venous drainage to the small saphenous vein and the structures around the lateral malleolus, including the sural nerve and the tendons of fibularis (peroneus) longus and brevis as they pass posteriorly. This is also a practical map for venipuncture on the dorsum of the foot, where site selection becomes more constrained in patients with obesity, edema, diabetes, or peripheral vascular disease, and for understanding how superficial thrombophlebitis can propagate along superficial channels toward the calf. The dorsal view makes the vein’s relationship to bony landmarks easy to teach and to translate to palpation. Use this illustration in lower limb anatomy teaching (podiatry, physiotherapy, medical gross anatomy) to connect skeletal landmarks to superficial venous pathways, or in nursing and phlebotomy materials addressing dorsal foot cannulation and complication avoidance.
