Description
Arising within the scalp of the temporal region, the superficial temporal vein is traced in lateral profile as it ascends anterior to the auricle and runs parallel to the superficial temporal artery. It lies superficial to the temporalis fascia and crosses the zygomatic arch before descending toward the parotid region, where it contributes to the retromandibular vein. Surrounding landmarks include the temporalis muscle superiorly, the masseter over the mandibular ramus, and the buccinator in the cheek, giving clear context for superficial versus deep planes. Fine venules and tributaries are shown converging into the main channel. Clear topography. Clinically, this lateral anatomy matters when working in the preauricular and temporal scalp, where the superficial temporal vessels are exposed during laceration repair and at risk during temporal artery biopsy, facelift incisions, and parotid approaches. The close relationship to the auriculotemporal nerve and the superficial temporal artery helps explain pulsatile bleeding patterns and guides safe dissection anterior to the tragus and along the zygomatic arch. Prominence of the vein also becomes relevant for scalp venous drainage patterns and for avoiding vascular injury during local anesthetic infiltration in the temple.
