Superficial Temporal Vein

Description

Seen in lateral profile on the male face and scalp, the superficial temporal vein courses inferiorly from the temporal region, lying superficial to the temporalis fascia and anterior to the auricle as it approaches the preauricular area. Superiorly it receives tributaries from the frontal and parietal scalp venous plexus, then descends in close company with the superficial temporal artery within the temporoparietal fascia. Along its path, nearby facial expression muscles such as orbicularis oculi and the buccolabial musculature (including orbicularis oris) provide orientation, while yellow-rendered cutaneous nerve branches track across the temple and cheek in the same surgical field. For procedural anatomy, this vein is more than a landmark. Its preauricular course makes it one of the first vessels encountered during facelift (rhytidectomy) dissection in the temporal region, where staying in the correct plane protects both the vein and the superficial temporal artery while reducing hematoma risk. The same corridor matters during superficial temporal artery biopsy for suspected giant cell (temporal) arteritis, since the vein can obscure the artery or be injured during exposure, and its proximity to the temporal branches of the facial nerve frames a common danger zone.
