Description
Running along the lateral aspect of the external nose, the lateral nasal vein is traced superficial to the nasal bone and adjacent upper lateral cartilage, then continues superiorly and posteriorly toward the angular vein at the medial canthus. Nearby venous channels of the nasal dorsum and alar region converge toward the facial vein system, with small venules visible in the subcutaneous plane over the maxilla. Bony landmarks in lateral profile include the nasal bone, frontal process of the maxilla, zygomatic bone, and the orbit, providing fixed reference points for the vessel’s course. Facial venous drainage around the nose matters because it sits at the junction of the facial vein, angular vein, and the superior ophthalmic vein, a route implicated in septic thrombophlebitis with potential spread to the cavernous sinus. Small, superficial veins over the nasal sidewall also become practical landmarks during rhinoplasty incisions, nasolabial flap planning, and soft tissue filler injection where inadvertent intravascular placement can lead to skin necrosis or ocular ischemic events via retrograde flow. This is a high-risk corridor. Seeing the vessel in true lateral perspective clarifies depth relative to the nasal skeleton and the orbit.
