Centered on the cardiopulmonary hilum, the left pulmonary artery arises from the pulmonary trunk and courses leftward, passing superior to the left main bronchus before dividing into lobar and segmental branches that accompany the bronchial tree into the lung. Anterior and slightly superior to it, the ascending aorta transitions into the aortic arch, with the ligamentum arteriosum spanning from the inferior aspect of the arch toward the proximal left pulmonary artery. Pulmonary veins return from the left lung to the left atrium in an inferoanterior plane relative to the artery, while the trachea bifurcates superiorly into the right and left main bronchi.
