Description
Posterior thoracic anatomy is presented with both lungs flanking the heart, emphasizing the broad diaphragmatic (inferior) lung surfaces that rest on the diaphragm and sweep anteroinferiorly toward the costal margins. Each lung is organized into lobes separated by fissures, with the right lung typically larger and extending more inferiorly because the heart projects leftward, and the left lung showing a deeper cardiac impression. At the hila, the main bronchi and pulmonary vessels converge medially, while the posterior aspect of the heart is formed largely by the left atrium superiorly and the left ventricle inferolaterally, with epicardial coronary arteries and veins tracing the atrioventricular and interventricular grooves. Posterior orientation matters when you want to teach why auscultation for lower-lobe pathology is performed over the back and why pleural fluid layers dependently in the costodiaphragmatic recess. This angle also supports clinical correlation with left atrial enlargement, which expands posteriorly and can compress the esophagus, and with posterior myocardial infarction patterns that relate to the inferoposterior left ventricle and coronary circulation.
