Description
Oriented in sagittal section through the male head and neck, the mandible is isolated and color-highlighted to distinguish it from the fixed cranial vault and midface. Anteriorly, the mandibular body and symphysis form the mental protuberance inferior to the mandibular incisors, while posteriorly the ramus rises toward the temporomandibular region, separated from the temporal bone in this cutaway. Superior and anterior landmarks of the skull remain visible in profile, including the orbit, nasal cavity, maxilla with dentition, and adjacent frontal and parietal bones. Inferior to the mandible, the hyoid sits in the suprahyoid compartment, and posterior to the pharyngeal region the cervical vertebrae align in a gentle lordosis. A sagittal presentation clarifies how mandibular position relates to the airway and the upper cervical spine, a relationship that matters in trauma assessment and perioperative planning. Fractures through the symphysis, parasymphysis, or body can alter occlusion and tongue base support, and mandibular setback from edema, hematoma, or sedation can narrow the oropharyngeal space. This angle also suits teaching the mechanics of the temporomandibular joint and mandibular mobility against the otherwise immobile facial skeleton. Good landmarks. Fast to orient.
