Description
Frontal presentation of an adult male mandible emphasizes the mandibular body and symphysis menti, with the mental protuberance forming the midline chin and the paired mental tubercles flanking it inferolaterally. Superiorly, the alveolar part outlines the dental arch with empty tooth sockets, while the inferior border of the corpus curves laterally toward the mandibular angles. Laterally, each ramus rises from the body, its coronoid process positioned anterosuperior to the mandibular notch and the condylar process, which sits posteriosuperior and forms the mandibular head and neck for the temporomandibular joint. An anterior perspective like this is the cleanest way to teach midline alignment of the symphysis and to compare right and left mandibular height, flare, and gonial width. It also supports clinical discussions around mandibular fractures, where parasymphysis and body fractures can be correlated with displacement patterns, and around edentulous alveolar resorption, which reduces vertical height and can alter mental foramen relationships relevant to local anesthesia. Small asymmetries matter here. They change occlusion and facial contour. Maxillofacial surgery texts and dental anatomy courses use this view to orient plate fixation along the inferior border, to plan genioplasty cuts across the anterior mandible, and to explain why periapical or panoramic findings require three-dimensional mental mapping of the jaw. It also fits well in radiology teaching when pairing dry bone anatomy with panoramic radiographs or cone-beam CT reconstructions of the mandibular body and rami.
