Description
Shown in right lateral aspect, the male mandible is rendered with the body extending anteriorly to the mental region and the ramus rising superiorly to the mandibular notch. Superior on the ramus, the coronoid process projects anterosuperiorly, while the condylar process sits posteriosuperiorly with a distinct neck leading toward the mandibular head. Along the superior border of the body, the alveolar process forms the tooth-bearing ridge, and the mandibular angle marks the junction where the inferior border of the body turns into the posterior border of the ramus. Bony surface texture is preserved. Lateral mandible anatomy matters most when you need to orient the temporomandibular joint and the masticatory muscle insertions in a single glance. The condylar process and neck define the bony lever arm involved in intracapsular and subcondylar fractures, injuries that can alter occlusion and mandibular range of motion, and their displacement is interpreted relative to the ramus and mandibular angle.
