Description
Seen from a superior aspect, the mandible forms a horseshoe-shaped alveolar part with a continuous dental arch, its tooth sockets (alveoli) running along the anterior symphysis and posteriorly toward the molar regions. Medially, the mandibular body encloses the floor of the oral cavity, while the external surface would sit lateral to the tongue space and genioglossus attachment. Posteriorly, the ramus rises from the body at the angle of the mandible, leading toward the coronoid and condylar processes, with the mandibular notch spanning between them. Orientation matters. A superior view emphasizes occlusal relationships and the distribution of the alveoli, which is where clinicians judge patterns of tooth loss, alveolar ridge resorption, and fracture lines that traverse the tooth-bearing segment. In maxillofacial trauma, parasymphyseal and body fractures often involve the roots and sockets, so understanding the curvature of the alveolar arch helps anticipate tooth instability and malocclusion after fixation. This perspective also supports preoperative planning for dental implant placement and bone grafting, where ridge width and arch form dictate implant angulation and spacing.
