Description
Arising from the facial nerve as it exits the stylomastoid foramen, the marginal mandibular (mandibular) branch courses anteriorly and inferiorly toward the body and angle of the mandible in a lateral male head and neck view. Its fibers run superficial to the mandible’s bony contour, typically crossing near the facial artery and vein at the anteroinferior border, then passing toward the lower lip and chin musculature. Surrounding osseous landmarks include the temporal bone and external acoustic meatus, the zygomatic arch, the maxilla with dentition, and the mandible with its ramus, angle, and body; posteriorly, the upper cervical vertebrae align behind the jaw and mastoid region. Fine cervical nerve contributions and adjacent cranial nerve exits may be indicated as additional yellow branches. For head and neck surgery, this lateral perspective matters because the marginal mandibular branch is one of the facial nerve’s most frequently injured peripheral branches during submandibular gland excision, level I neck dissection, and facelift (rhytidectomy) incisions placed too close to the mandibular margin. Weakness of depressor anguli oris and depressor labii inferioris follows, producing lower lip asymmetry that is obvious at rest and with smiling. This view also helps distinguish facial nerve motor territory from trigeminal sensory distributions, a common point of confusion when correlating facial numbness versus paresis. Useful in gross anatomy and head and neck modules, the artwork supports teaching of cranial nerve VII branching patterns, safe surgical planes around the mandibular angle, and surface anatomy marking for clinic skills.
