Description
Oriented in a sagittal section of the male head and neck, the medial pterygoid (internal pterygoid) is presented deep to the mandibular ramus, its muscular belly lying medial to the angle of the mandible and running inferoposteriorly toward its insertion on the medial surface of the ramus and angle (pterygoid tuberosity). Superiorly, its fibers relate to the pterygoid region of the sphenoid and the pterygomandibular space, while laterally the mandibular ramus forms the bony boundary opposite the masseter on the external surface. Adjacent landmarks in this lateral/sagittal cut logically include the maxillary teeth and alveolar process, the temporomandibular region, the cranial base with sinus cavities, and the cervical spine continuing inferiorly from the occiput. For teaching mastication mechanics, this view clarifies how the medial pterygoid forms a functional sling with the masseter around the mandibular angle, generating elevation and assisting in contralateral excursion of the jaw during grinding. It also situates the muscle in relation to the mandibular foramen region on the medial ramus, a practical reference when discussing inferior alveolar nerve blocks and why needle placement must respect the pterygomandibular space.
