Description
Seen from the inferior aspect of the cranial cavity, the meningeal branch of the mandibular nerve (nervus spinosus) is traced as it turns posteriorly and superiorly to accompany the middle meningeal artery through the foramen spinosum. Just anteromedial to this relationship, the foramen ovale marks the exit of V3 from the trigeminal ganglion, with adjacent cranial nerves arranged around the brainstem and cavernous sinus region in their expected basal order. Red arterial channels define the Circle of Willis around the interpeduncular fossa, while blue venous pathways provide a counterpoint to the arterial anatomy at the skull base. Spatially, the nervus spinosus sits lateral to the sella region and medial to the infratemporal fossa boundary, a small structure positioned in a busy neighborhood. This inferior view matters because it links a named neural branch to a reliable surgical and radiologic landmark, the middle meningeal artery. The artery’s course from the maxillary artery into the cranial cavity explains why temporal bone fracture can lacerate it and produce an epidural hematoma, and why the accompanying meningeal branch may contribute to pain referral from dura mater in trigeminally mediated headache syndromes.
