Description

Posterolaterally, the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon descends from the distal triceps surae as a thick, longitudinally striated band to insert on the posterior calcaneal tuberosity. A lateral view also exposes the talus seated superior to the calcaneus, the subtalar region, and the tarsal to metatarsal alignment extending anteriorly toward the phalanges. The tendon sits superficial to the posterior aspect of the ankle joint, while the calcaneus forms its deep bony buttress. Clean anatomy. Rupture and tendinopathy cluster a few centimeters proximal to the calcaneal insertion, so a side-on morphological rendering helps clarify why that watershed zone behaves differently from the enthesis. The relationship of tendon fibers to the posterior calcaneus frames discussions of insertional Achilles tendinopathy, retrocalcaneal bursitis, and Haglund-type impingement, where friction and compression can dominate symptoms more than pure tensile overload. Surgeons planning an open or percutaneous Achilles repair, or a calcaneal exostectomy with tendon debridement, often teach from this exact lateral geometry because it mirrors the operative field and the line of pull during plantarflexion. Use this artwork for lower limb anatomy labs, sports medicine and orthopaedic teaching files, and textbook figures explaining the tendo calcaneus, its insertion, and adjacent hindfoot bones. It also suits patient-facing handouts for Achilles rupture and rehabilitation protocols where clear bony landmarks improve informed consent and adherence.
