Description
Arterial supply to the orbit is rendered in a sectional head view centered on the globe, with the ophthalmic artery entering the orbital cavity and distributing branches along the medial orbital wall and around the sclera. From a proximal trunk near the orbital apex, smaller arterioles track anteriorly and laterally across the episcleral surface, while deeper branches course posteriorly toward the optic nerve as they approach the posterior pole. Bony margins of the orbit frame the field, and adjacent ethmoid air cells sit medial to the orbit, separated by the thin lamina papyracea. Orientation is clear. The vascular network dominates. Clinically, this relationship between ocular vessels and the ethmoid labyrinth matters because the anterior and posterior ethmoidal arteries and veins traverse the frontoethmoidal suture line and can be injured during functional endoscopic sinus surgery, producing brisk orbital hemorrhage or a retrobulbar hematoma with acute vision threat. The illustration also supports teaching of the ophthalmic artery as an internal carotid branch and its collateral connections with the external carotid system, a point that becomes practical during embolization planning for epistaxis or vascular tumors. Medial orbital anatomy is unforgiving.
