Description
Spherical human blastocyst morphology is rendered with a distinct outer trophectoderm (trophoblast) forming a continuous epithelial shell around the blastocoel cavity, while the embryoblast (inner cell mass) sits eccentrically against the inner wall at one pole. A thin zona pellucida encircles the conceptus as a translucent capsule, separating the trophectoderm from the surrounding environment until hatching occurs. Relative to the embryoblast, the abembryonic pole lies opposite across the fluid-filled cavity. Polarity is clear. Timing matters at this stage, typically day 5 to 6 post-fertilization, because the transition from a zona-enclosed blastula to a hatching blastocyst sets the conditions for implantation into the endometrium. Seeing the relationship between the inner cell mass and the trophectoderm helps clarify why an embryo can arrest when the embryoblast fails to expand appropriately, even if the trophectoderm appears intact. This view also maps cleanly onto assisted reproduction, where blastocyst grading weighs trophectoderm cohesion and inner cell mass definition, and where preimplantation genetic testing samples trophectoderm rather than embryoblast to reduce risk to the future embryo proper.
