Description
Seen in lateral aspect after a sagittal section, the cerebral cortex forms the superior and anterior contour with gyri and sulci of the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes leading posteriorly toward the cerebellum. Deep to the cingulate region, the corpus callosum arches anterosuperior to the lateral ventricle and continues into the fornix, while the third ventricle sits inferior and medial between the diencephalic structures. Inferiorly, the brainstem descends from midbrain to pons and medulla, lying anterior to the fourth ventricle and continuous caudally with the cervical spinal cord; the cerebellar vermis and hemispheric folia occupy the posteroinferior fossa. A midline or parasagittal cut is the teaching view that makes ventricular anatomy and commissural relationships intuitive, so you can track cerebrospinal fluid spaces from the lateral ventricle toward the midline third ventricle and back to the fourth ventricle. It also maps cleanly onto common clinical workflows: ventriculomegaly in hydrocephalus, midline shift from mass effect, and transtensorial herniation with brainstem compression are typically interpreted by following these exact superior to inferior relationships.
