Description
Shown in lateral profile, the male thoracic cage is rendered with the costal cartilages (chondral segments) extending anteriorly from the sternal ends of the ribs toward the sternum, while the posterior rib angles sweep back to the thoracic vertebrae. Superior to inferior, the true ribs (1 to 7) are expected to connect to the sternum via their own costal cartilages, and ribs 8 to 10 converge toward the costal margin as they approach the cartilage of the rib above. Ribs 11 and 12 remain free anteriorly as floating ribs. A portion of the vertebral column is included, with thoracic vertebrae and intervertebral discs aligned posterior to the rib heads and necks. Costal cartilage anatomy matters when you need to distinguish flexible anterior thoracic wall mechanics from the rigid posterior rib and vertebral articulations. This lateral orientation clarifies how the costochondral junction and costosternal joints contribute to the pump handle and bucket handle movements of respiration, and it provides an immediate visual framework for localizing costochondritis at the parasternal cartilage versus pain from posterior costovertebral dysfunction.
