Description
Concentric tunics are rendered in cross-section as a teaching slice through the small intestine wall, with an outer tunica serosa (or adventitia where retroperitoneal) encasing the bowel and an inner mucosa facing the central lumen. Deep to the serosal connective tissue sit the muscular layers, an outer longitudinal and inner circular stratum of the muscularis externa, separated from the submucosa by the myenteric (Auerbach) plexus plane. Closest to the lumen, the submucosa supports the mucosa, whose lamina propria and muscularis mucosae define the boundary between absorptive surface and deeper support tissues. A clear inside-out organization. Although the title references duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, this laminar view is most often used to teach how regional specializations map onto the same basic wall plan, for example Brunner glands in the proximal duodenum within the submucosa and aggregated lymphoid nodules (Peyer patches) in the distal ileum extending from lamina propria into submucosa. That layering matters in practice: transmural Crohn disease tracks through submucosa and muscularis to serosa, while ulcerative colitis stays mucosal and submucosal, a distinction that guides endoscopic assessment, biopsy depth, and operative planning. Use this artwork in GI histology and gross anatomy courses when introducing the tunica concept and the relationship between mucosa, submucosa, and muscularis externa, or in pathology and radiology teaching when correlating wall thickening patterns with inflammatory bowel disease. It also suits textbooks and patient-facing surgical brochures explaining why some lesions remain superficial while others perforate or fistulize.
