Description
Seen from a left lateral perspective, the levator scapulae runs as a straplike muscle from the posterior tubercles of the transverse processes of C1 to C4 down to the superior angle and adjacent medial border of the scapula. Its cervical attachments sit inferior to the occiput and posterior to the mandibular ramus, while the scapular insertion lies superior and medial to the glenoid and the spine of the scapula. Portions of the cervical vertebrae, upper thoracic spine, ribs, and elements of the shoulder girdle, including scapula and clavicle, frame the muscle’s course. Fiber direction is clear. The relationship to the overlying trapezius is also suggested along the posterior neck and shoulder. This lateral setup matters when you need to explain coupled cervical motion and scapular positioning, because levator scapulae can elevate and downwardly rotate the scapula while also contributing to ipsilateral cervical side-bending and rotation when the shoulder girdle is fixed. Clinically, it is a common source of myofascial pain and trigger points at the superior angle of the scapula, and it is often implicated in neck stiffness after whiplash or prolonged desk posture with scapular depression. The superior cervical transverse processes are common landmarks during image-guided injections and during dissection when separating levator scapulae from adjacent scalenes and the prevertebral fascia. Use this plate in gross anatomy teaching of the posterior cervical region and shoulder girdle, in physical therapy education on scapulocervical rhythm, or in clinical handouts describing levator scapulae strain and targeted stretching along the medial scapular border.
