Description
Inferiorly oriented at the cranial base, the illustration tracks neurovasculature as it traverses the foramina and canals of the skull. Cranial nerves emerge in sequence, with the olfactory bulbs and tracts positioned most anteriorly over the cribriform plate, the optic nerves converging toward the optic canal, and the trigeminal nerve expanding at the trigeminal (Gasserian) ganglion before dividing into V1, V2, and V3 toward the superior orbital fissure, foramen rotundum, and foramen ovale. More posteriorly, the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves course toward the internal acoustic meatus, the glossopharyngeal, vagus, and accessory nerves exit via the jugular foramen, and the hypoglossal nerve passes through the hypoglossal canal, all framed by the internal carotid arteries at the carotid canal and the vertebral arteries approaching the foramen magnum. Clean landmarks. Correlation with skull base anatomy makes this angle practical for teaching why deficits cluster by foramen, for example V3 sensory loss and masticatory weakness with lesions at foramen ovale, or combined IX to XI palsies with jugular foramen pathology (Vernet syndrome). The close relationship of the internal carotid artery to the cavernous sinus region also supports discussions of cavernous sinus thrombosis, carotid-cavernous fistula, and the pattern of ocular motor neuropathies when cranial nerves III, IV, V1, V2, and VI share a confined corridor. Neuroanatomy, head and neck anatomy, and neurosurgery courses use this plate to anchor cranial nerve exit points, ganglia, and adjacent arteries and veins during lab practicals and exam preparation.
