Omohyoid Muscle, Lateral View

Description

Running obliquely across the lateral neck, the omohyoid is shown as a slender infrahyoid strap muscle extending from the superior border of the scapula toward the hyoid bone, with an intermediate tendon typically tethered to the clavicle by a fascial sling. Superiorly, its cranial attachment lies on the inferior aspect of the hyoid, just inferior to the mandibular body and adjacent to the suprahyoid region, while inferiorly it crosses the lower neck above the clavicle and upper ribs. Deep to its belly, the carotid sheath course is suggested by the cervical carotid artery ascending toward the skull base, and posteriorly the cervical vertebrae and intervertebral discs establish the bony depth plane. The hyoid sits anterior to the cervical spine. A lateral rendering like this earns its keep when you need an external landmark that tracks the fascial compartments of the anterior triangle, because the omohyoid divides the posterior triangle into occipital and omoclavicular (supraclavicular) triangles and crosses near the lower jugular chain where lymph node levels III and IV are mapped in head and neck oncology. That relationship matters during selective neck dissection and when planning incision lines that avoid unnecessary disruption of the ansa cervicalis branches that innervate the infrahyoid strap muscles.
