Description
Plantarly oriented, the lateral compartment of the sole is opened to center the opponens digiti minimi as it runs along the plantar and lateral aspect of the fifth metatarsal, deep to the plantar aponeurosis and adjacent to the flexor digiti minimi brevis. Medial to it lie the long flexor tendons, including the flexor digitorum longus slips heading distally to the lesser toes, while proximally the muscle belly arises near the cuboid and the sheath of the fibularis (peroneus) longus tendon as it turns into the sole. The base and shaft of the fifth metatarsal act as the bony rail, with the metatarsophalangeal joint and proximal phalanx of the little toe positioned distally, and the abductor digiti minimi occupying a more superficial, lateral plane. Functionally, opponens digiti minimi draws the fifth metatarsal into slight plantarflexion and medial rotation, helping cup the lateral border of the forefoot during stance and push-off. Small muscle, real consequences. Because it is supplied by the lateral plantar nerve (superficial branch), this view supports teaching of lateral plantar neuropathy and iatrogenic risk during lateral midfoot approaches and plantar incisions near the cuboid and fifth metatarsal, where denervation can weaken little-toe purchase and contribute to painful transfer loading under the lateral metatarsal heads. The relationship to the fifth metatarsal also makes it a useful landmark when discussing fracture patterns at the base of the fifth metatarsal and postoperative plantar soft-tissue handling. Use this plate in gross anatomy and lower-limb dissection labs to clarify the layering of intrinsic plantar muscles, or in podiatric and orthopedic teaching materials covering lateral column mechanics, bunionette correction, and lateral plantar nerve anatomy.
