Description
Running from the soft palate to the lateral margin of the tongue, the palatoglossus is highlighted in a mid-sagittal section of the male head and neck, forming the palatoglossal arch at the anterior pillar of the fauces. Superiorly it blends with the palatine aponeurosis of the velum, while inferiorly it descends into the tongue substance just anterior to the palatopharyngeus, narrowing the oropharyngeal isthmus between the oral cavity and pharynx. Surrounding osseous landmarks in profile include the maxilla and mandible, the hyoid bone inferior to the tongue base, and the cervical vertebrae posteriorly supporting the pharyngeal wall. Clinically, this view clarifies how palatoglossus depresses the soft palate and elevates the posterior tongue, a coordinated action during the oral phase of swallowing that helps seal the fauces before bolus propulsion. The palatoglossal arch is also a practical landmark for the tonsillar fossa just posterior to it, where dissection during tonsillectomy can expose the glossopharyngeal nerve and lead to postoperative taste disturbance or referred otalgia.
