Description
Arising from the palatine aponeurosis of the soft palate, the palatoglossus muscle descends anteriorly and inferiorly to blend with the lateral margin and dorsum of the tongue, forming the substance of the palatoglossal arch at the oropharyngeal isthmus. Inferiorly, the mandible frames the floor of the oral cavity, with the dental arches and teeth shown in anatomical alignment, and adjacent muscles of mastication such as the masseter and medial pterygoid positioned lateral and medial to the mandibular ramus. Blue neurovascular elements track along the posterior oral cavity and submandibular region, running deep to the mucosa and around the mandibular body in the expected relationship to the tongue base and floor of mouth. Spatially, the soft palate sits superior to the tongue, while the palatoglossus provides a direct muscular bridge between them. Functionally, palatoglossus is the key sphincter-like component of the anterior tonsillar pillar, narrowing the oropharyngeal isthmus during swallowing and contributing to bolus control as the tongue elevates. This is also a clinically practical landmark: asymmetric movement of the soft palate and palatoglossal arch helps localize vagal or pharyngeal plexus dysfunction, and the anterior pillar is routinely manipulated during tonsillectomy with attention to bleeding from nearby tonsillar branches and postoperative dysphagia.
