Description
Cut through the mid-sagittal plane of an adult male head and upper neck, the cerebrum occupies the cranial cavity beneath the calvaria, with gyri and sulci outlined and the pia mater (leptomeninx) shown as a thin vascular membrane tightly apposed to the cortical surface and dipping into the sulci. Superior and anterior, frontal lobe cortex lies deep to the frontal bone, while posteriorly the occipital region abuts the inner table of the skull; inferior relationships are suggested by the cranial base above the nasal cavity and oral cavity, with the mandible and dentition seen anterior-inferior. The upper cervical spine aligns inferior to the cranial vault, indicating the craniovertebral junction in profile. Pia mater matters because it is inseparable from the brain surface in life and defines the outer boundary of cortical tissue during surgery, autopsy, and imaging interpretation. This sagittal section supports teaching the meningeal layers by contrast: the pia hugs the brain, while the clinically relevant cerebrospinal fluid space lies superficial to it in the subarachnoid compartment where blood collects in subarachnoid hemorrhage and spreads along sulci and basal cisterns. Small pial arteries and veins course within or immediately deep to this membrane, a practical anatomic substrate for cortical infarcts from distal branch occlusion.
