Description
Plantar anatomy of the male foot is presented with the phalanges, metatarsals, and the tarsal complex (calcaneus, talus, navicular, cuboid, and cuneiforms) aligned in an anatomically typical arch. Along the lateral plantar border, the abductor digiti minimi is emphasized in red, arising proximally from the calcaneal region and running anteriorly toward the base of the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe. The muscle sits superficial to the lateral metatarsals and lateral tarsus, lateral to the central plantar compartment and inferior to the bony framework it supports. Joint regions are indicated by pale blue markings at the interphalangeal, metatarsophalangeal, tarsometatarsal, and midtarsal articulations. Emphasizing abductor digiti minimi in a plantar view matters because this is the muscle most clinicians palpate along the lateral sole when assessing lateral plantar pain and fifth ray mechanics.
