Description
Presented as a lateral section through a male foot under the skin, the cut passes from the posterior calcaneus and talus toward the metatarsals and phalanges, keeping the plantar soft tissues in profile beneath the bony arch. Along the posterior aspect, the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon inserts onto the calcaneal tuberosity, while the plantar aponeurosis fans anteriorly along the sole, superficial to the flexor digitorum brevis and deeper intrinsic layers. On the lateral side of the midfoot and forefoot, muscle bellies and tendons cluster around the cuboid and fifth metatarsal region, with accompanying arteries and nerves tracking between compartments. Landmarks are clear. That relationship between the Achilles tendon, calcaneus, and plantar fascia is not academic, it is the mechanical chain stressed in Achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis, and it explains why limited ankle dorsiflexion can load the medial calcaneal tubercle during gait. A lateral sectional view also maps the course of the lateral plantar neurovascular bundle and the deep tendon paths as they approach the forefoot, where tenosynovitis, tendon subluxation, or post-traumatic scarring can compromise gliding within synovial sheaths. The bony contours of the talus over the calcaneus help orient subtalar joint alignment, a frequent teaching sticking point.
