Description
Beneath a semi-transparent skin envelope, the male foot is rendered with the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges in anatomical alignment, from the calcaneus posteriorly to the distal phalanges anteriorly. Posterior to the ankle, the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon descends from the triceps surae to insert on the posterior calcaneal tuberosity, while long tendons course distally toward the toes and fan across the dorsum and plantar aspect. Intrinsic plantar muscle bellies occupy the sole, layered superficial to deep around the metatarsal shafts and intermetatarsal spaces, with fibrous bands and ligaments spanning between adjacent bones to steady the arches. Dense architecture. Clinical reading of this morphology starts at the hindfoot. The relationship between the Achilles tendon, calcaneus, and plantar soft tissues matters in tendinopathy and insertional enthesopathy, and it is also the anatomic backdrop for retrocalcaneal bursitis and Haglund-type posterior heel pain. Distally, the interplay of plantar intrinsic muscles, long flexor tendons, and ligamentous supports under the metatarsal heads frames common problems like metatarsalgia, clawing of the toes from intrinsic weakness, and loss of medial longitudinal arch control in progressive flatfoot deformity.
