Presented with the knee in flexion and viewed from an anterior perspective, the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is seen coursing from the lateral surface of the medial femoral condyle to the posterior intercondylar area of the tibia, deep within the intercondylar notch. The anterior cruciate ligament sits more anteriorly and runs in the opposite oblique direction, so the two cruciates cross centrally between the femoral condyles. Medial and lateral menisci occupy the tibial plateau inferior to the femoral articular cartilage, framing the intercondylar eminence and the tibial attachment region of the cruciate fibers. Bone contours matter here. Flexion brings the cruciates into clearer relief because the intercondylar notch opens anteriorly, letting you track fiber orientation and distinguish the PCL from the ACL by its femoral origin and posterior tibial insertion.
