Description
Running along the anterior thigh, the rectus femoris is highlighted in lateral profile as the most superficial, midline component of the quadriceps femoris. Proximally it arises from the anterior inferior iliac spine and the superior acetabular rim, then descends anterior to the femoral shaft, lying superficial to vastus intermedius while bordering vastus lateralis laterally as the muscle belly narrows toward the knee. Distally, its fibers converge into the quadriceps tendon, crossing the patella and continuing as the patellar ligament to the tibial tuberosity, with the femur, patella, tibia, and fibula providing clear bony landmarks for orientation. Bone landmarks are easy to teach. A lateral view matters because it clarifies the rectus femoris as a biarticular muscle that spans both the hip and knee, so hip extension with knee flexion places it on stretch and explains the classic sprinting or kicking strain pattern at the proximal myotendinous junction near the AIIS.
