Description
Body of the sphenoid (corpus ossis sphenoidalis) is centered in the midline of the neurocranium, immediately anterior to the basilar part of the occipital bone and superior to the nasopharyngeal roof. Superiorly, the dorsum sellae rises as a posterior wall for the sella turcica, while the smooth, squared posterior surface of the sphenoid body sits directly inferior to it, forming the anterior portion of the clival slope toward the foramen magnum. Laterally, the body transitions toward the bases of the greater wings and the carotid grooves (sulci caroticus), the bony channels that relate to the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery. These relationships matter any time you teach or plan work around the central skull base. The dorsum sellae and posterior surface of the sphenoid body frame the posterior limit of transsphenoidal corridors to the hypophyseal fossa, and they also anchor the clival region encountered in expanded endonasal approaches for chordoma or petroclival meningioma, where millimeters of orientation determine whether the surgeon stays midline or drifts toward the cavernous sinus. Crisp bony edges and a clean separation of planes in this fixed perspective help learners distinguish dorsum sellae, clivus, and adjacent sphenoid body surfaces without being distracted by overlying soft tissues. Bone is unforgiving.
