Description
Sphenoid body (corpus ossis sphenoidalis) dominates this inferior view of the skull base, with the midline rostrum projecting inferiorly as a sharp sagittal ridge. On either side, the inferior surface broadens laterally toward the junctions with the roots of the pterygoid processes, marking the transition from the central neurocranium to the viscerocranial buttresses. The rostrum sits medial to these lateral expansions and forms the superior aspect of the vomerine articulation, where the posterior nasal septum anchors at the midline. That rostrum matters in endoscopic skull base work because it is a dependable midline landmark when approaching the sphenoid sinus and sella turcica through the nasal cavity, and it helps orient the surgeon relative to the vomer and posterior septal attachments. Small asymmetries in this region can shift the apparent midline, a practical issue during transsphenoidal hypophysectomy when the bony septations of the sphenoidal sinus are unreliable.
