Description
Centered in the epigastrium and left hypochondrium, the ventriculus (stomach) lies inferior to the distal esophagus and just left of the midline, with the cardia positioned superiorly and the pylorus directed to the right toward the proximal duodenum. The lesser curvature forms the superomedial border, running from cardia to pyloric antrum, while the greater curvature sweeps inferolaterally toward the left, where it would relate to the greater omentum. Superior and slightly anterior, the fundus domes beneath the left hemidiaphragm; inferior to the gastric body, loops of small intestine and the framing large intestine occupy the central and lower abdomen beneath the anterior abdominal wall. Orientation is clear. Obesity changes the teaching problem. Increased subcutaneous adipose and a thicker anterior abdominal wall can obscure surface landmarks, shift apparent organ contours, and complicate physical examination and procedural planning.
