Description
Centered within the thoracic cavity, the heart is shown in situ with emphasis on its superior border, where the right atrium forms most of the contour and meets the great vessels at the base. Superiorly and slightly leftward, the ascending aorta continues into the aortic arch, while the pulmonary trunk arises anteriorly from the right ventricle and courses superiorly before bifurcating toward the hila. The superior vena cava descends on the right side of the mediastinum to enter the right atrium at the superior aspect, and coronary arteries trace the epicardial surface within the coronary sulcus near the atrioventricular junction. Ribs frame the scene laterally, with bronchial and proximal lung structures suggested posterior and lateral to the pericardial silhouette. Attention to the superior border matters because it is the practical landmark for the junction between the heart and the mediastinal great vessels, the region assessed when you interpret the superior mediastinum on chest radiographs and CT angiography. Widening or distortion here raises specific differentials, including pericardial effusion altering the cardiac silhouette, aneurysmal dilation of the aortic arch, or enlargement of the right atrium and superior vena cava in volume overload or obstructive processes. Catheter paths also live in this territory, from central venous lines traversing the SVC to pacemaker leads entering the right atrium. Small territory. High consequences.
