Description

Seen from a superior cranial section, the paired globes sit anterior to the foramen magnum within the opened cranial cavity, with the orbital roofs removed to expose the extrinsic eye muscles. Each superior oblique muscle arises near the orbital apex on the body of the sphenoid, just superomedial to the optic canal, then runs anteriorly along the superomedial orbit beneath the superior rectus. The superior, inferior, medial, and lateral rectus muscles encircle the anterior optic nerve in a cone, while the optic nerves course posteriorly toward the chiasmatic region. Suture lines and the inner table of the skull provide bony orientation around the anterior and middle cranial fossae.
