Description
Viewed from superior to inferior through a cranial section, the paired orbits sit anterior to the cranial cavity while the foramen magnum lies posterior and midline at the skull base. Within each orbit, the superior rectus muscle courses forward along the superior aspect of the globe, its tendon inserting onto the sclera anterior to the equator and superior to the limbus. Posteriorly, the muscle belly approaches the annulus of Zinn at the orbital apex, lying superior to the optic nerve and in close relation to the levator palpebrae superioris. Bony landmarks of the orbital roof and margins frame the extraocular compartment. A superior perspective like this clarifies the classic relationship between the superior rectus, the optic nerve, and the orbital apex, which is where surgical access and pathology often converge. Oculomotor nerve (CN III) branches enter the superior rectus on its inferior surface near the posterior orbit, a detail that matters when teaching patterns of ophthalmoplegia and when interpreting diplopia from trauma or cavernous sinus disease.
