Description
Prominent thoracic vertebral bodies (T1 to T12) are presented from an anterior perspective in a male, stacked inferiorly with a gentle kyphotic contour that makes the bodies appear to slope as they descend. Along the lateral margins of each body, superior and inferior costal demi facets form paired articular sites for the heads of the ribs, while transverse costal facets on the transverse processes (most consistently T1 to T10) sit posterolateral to the vertebral bodies and align with the tubercles of the ribs. Intervertebral discs occupy the spaces between adjacent vertebral bodies, and the anterior longitudinal ligament would course vertically along the anterior surfaces. Clear landmarks. Anterior thoracic anatomy matters when you need to teach why rib motion and thoracic spinal motion are mechanically linked, and where pathology tends to declare itself. Osteophytes and disc space narrowing from thoracic spondylosis are often first appreciated as anterior and anterolateral contour changes on radiographs or CT, and the costovertebral joints can become pain generators in inflammatory arthropathy. For surgeons, this orientation also supports understanding of anterior or anterolateral approaches to the thoracic spine, where the vertebral bodies and discs, not the posterior elements, are the primary working corridor near the pleura and segmental vessels.
