Description
Viewed from the lateral aspect of an adult male leg, the tibia (shinbone) lies medial and anterior, while the fibula (perone, calfbone) runs parallel on the lateral side of the shank. Proximally, the fibular head sits posterolateral to the lateral tibial condyle, and distally the fibula extends inferiorly to form the lateral malleolus, positioned lateral and slightly posterior to the tibial plafond and medial malleolus. Along the shafts, the tibial anterior border and the fibular shaft curvature read clearly in profile. Interosseous space separates the two bones. A lateral perspective matters when you need to teach or plan around palpable and surgical landmarks: the fibular head and neck relate to the common fibular (peroneal) nerve as it winds around the neck, a frequent site of neuropraxia after knee trauma or tight casting. It also frames the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis and mortise geometry, which guide fixation strategy in Weber B and C ankle fractures and in Maisonneuve patterns where an occult proximal fibular fracture accompanies syndesmotic disruption.
