Description
Superiorly oriented, the proximal tibia is presented as the medial and lateral tibial condyles separated by the intercondylar area, with the intercondylar eminence (medial and lateral intercondylar tubercles) rising centrally between the articular surfaces. The medial plateau appears broader anteroposteriorly, while the lateral plateau is more circular and slightly elevated, reflecting their differing roles in load transmission across the knee. Just anterior to the intercondylar region, the tibial tuberosity marks the proximal anterior surface where the patellar ligament inserts. Meniscal attachment rims and the margins of the articular cartilage are implied by the contour changes at the plateau edges. A superior perspective on the tibial plateau is the one most aligned with intraoperative and arthroscopic thinking, because it frames the ACL and PCL footprints within the intercondylar region and clarifies their relationship to the anterior and posterior horns of the menisci. This is the plane you reference when teaching tibial plateau fractures (Schatzker patterns), depressed lateral plateau injuries after valgus loading, or when planning the tibial tunnel position in ACL reconstruction.
