Description
Spanning the posterior neck and upper thorax, the trapezius forms a broad, diamond-shaped sheet from the external occipital protuberance and nuchal ligament down to the spinous processes of the upper and mid thoracic vertebrae. Its fibers run laterally to insert along the lateral third of the clavicle, the acromion, and the spine of the scapula, framing the posterior shoulder girdle on both sides. Deep to the highlighted muscle, the scapulae sit posterolateral to the rib cage, while the vertebral column and posterior ribs provide midline and thoracic landmarks. The pelvis anchors the inferior extent of the skeletal context. Posterior trapezius anatomy matters because scapular position is a prerequisite for efficient glenohumeral motion and for clearing the acromion during arm elevation. Upper trapezius overactivity and weakness of the lower trapezius commonly contribute to scapular dyskinesis, a pattern seen alongside subacromial impingement symptoms and rotator cuff tendinopathy in overhead athletes.
