Description
Running along the medial side of the proximal forearm, the ulnar artery is traced from its origin at the brachial artery bifurcation in the cubital fossa, then carried distally deep to the flexor–pronator mass while approaching the ulnar (medial) border of the wrist. Posteriorly, its course can be understood relative to the ulna and interosseous membrane, with segmental branches passing laterally toward the deep forearm and an accompanying ulnar venae comitantes flanking the artery. Superficial veins, typically the basilic system on the medial aspect and the cephalic system laterally, may be suggested more superficially, separated from the deep arterial plane by fascia and muscle. Orientation matters. Clinically, the ulnar artery is the dominant inflow to the superficial palmar arch in most individuals, so appreciating its distal trajectory at the volar ulnar wrist helps explain why lacerations near the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon can produce brisk bleeding and threaten digital perfusion. A posterior perspective also supports teaching the relationship between the ulnar artery and the common interosseous artery and its branches, a frequent point of confusion when learners move between dissection, angiography, and operative anatomy. This is a clean way to link surface landmarks to deep planes. Use this artwork in upper limb anatomy modules, surgical anatomy teaching for forearm fasciotomy and wrist approaches, or vascular access and hand perfusion discussions that reference Allen testing and palmar arch variants.
