Description
Posterior to the femoral condyles and proximal tibia, a network of deep knee veins courses within and around the popliteal fossa, collecting venules from the pericapsular plexus and converging toward the popliteal vein. Superiorly, tributaries track along the distal femur; inferiorly, channels descend across the posterior joint line toward the proximal tibia. Medial and lateral venous arcades hug the respective condyles, framing the intercondylar region where the capsule and cruciate ligament attachments sit deep to the vascular plane. No patella is present in this posterior perspective. Posterior knee venous anatomy matters because this is where orthopedic exposure, arthroscopy portals, and penetrating trauma can meet a crowded neurovascular corridor, with the popliteal vein lying close to the posterior capsule and vulnerable during posterior capsular release or instrumentation that strays beyond the tibial plateau. Venous stasis and thrombosis often involve the popliteal segment, and appreciating the local venous plexus helps explain why calf muscle pump dysfunction and periarticular swelling can propagate symptoms across the joint line.
