Description
Running obliquely from the zygomatic bone (malar eminence) to the modiolus at the oral commissure, the paired zygomaticus major muscles sit in the superficial musculoaponeurotic system just deep to the superficial fascia of the cheek. Each belly courses inferomedially, lateral to the levator labii superioris and superior to the risorius, then blends with the orbicularis oris and adjacent perioral elevators at the corner of the mouth. Superiorly, the orbicularis oculi frames the orbit, while nasal muscles and the frontalis occupy the midface and forehead in grayscale context. Bilateral symmetry is clear.
