Rendered as an icosahedral virion, the turnip yellow mosaic virus (TYMV) particle is organized into repeating coat protein subunits that form tightly packed capsomeres across the entire spherical surface. Petal-like protrusions project radially from the capsid, creating a scalloped outer contour that corresponds to surface loops of the TYMV capsid protein arranged around fivefold and threefold symmetry axes. Beneath this protein shell, the positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome would be enclosed within the capsid interior, separated from the exterior environment by the continuous protein lattice. Geometry dominates. TYMV is a classic teaching model for plant virus architecture because its icosahedral symmetry and uniform capsid pattern make principles of capsomere organization and antigenic surface topology easy to discuss without the visual noise of an envelope.
