Description
Centered in the upper abdomen, the ventriculus (stomach) sits inferior to the diaphragm and left lobe of the liver, continuous superiorly with the abdominal esophagus at the cardia and tapering distally toward the pylorus. The gastric fundus rises superior and left of the gastroesophageal junction, while the body curves inferomedially toward the antrum along the lesser curvature, with the greater curvature sweeping inferiorly and laterally. Superficial muscle contours of the gastric wall are emphasized, suggesting the underlying layers (longitudinal, circular, and oblique fibers) that shape the gastric pouch. Other external body landmarks remain visible in anatomical position for orientation. Clear emphasis on the esophagus to stomach pathway supports teaching of gastroesophageal anatomy and anti-reflux mechanisms at the lower esophageal sphincter and diaphragmatic hiatus.
