Description
Centered in the upper abdomen, the esophagus descends through the diaphragmatic hiatus to join the stomach at the cardiac orifice, with the gastroesophageal junction positioned just left of the midline. The gastric fundus rises superiorly beneath the left hemidiaphragm, while the body of the ventriculus extends inferiorly toward the antrum. Along the stomach’s lateral margin, the greater curvature sweeps inferolaterally, opposite the shorter, more medial lesser curvature that leads toward the pyloric region. Surface anatomy context is maintained on a standing adult female figure, orienting the stomach deep to the left costal margin and epigastrium. Clear depiction of the esophagus-to-stomach transition supports teaching around reflux and the anti-reflux barrier at the lower esophageal sphincter, where mucosal injury in gastroesophageal reflux disease commonly concentrates near the Z-line. Spatial relationships also matter for hiatal hernia, in which the proximal stomach migrates superiorly through the esophageal hiatus and alters the expected position of the cardia and fundus. Endoscopy and upper GI contrast studies depend on this anatomy. So does safe surgical planning.
