Description
Seen from a calvaria-removed superior view into the cranial cavity, the basilar venous plexus forms an interlacing venous network on the dorsal surface of the clivus, positioned inferior to the dorsum sellae and anterior to the foramen magnum. Posteriorly it communicates with the internal vertebral venous plexus, while superiorly it links toward the dural venous sinuses around the petroclival region, including the inferior petrosal sinus margins along the petro-occipital fissure. More laterally, the transverse sinus courses along the attached margin of the tentorium cerebelli, and the superior sagittal sinus tracks in the midline along the inner table of the frontal, parietal, and occipital bones. Cranial sutures, orbits, nasal aperture, and maxillary dentition anchor orientation. Because the basilar plexus sits at the skull base and lacks valves, it provides a low-pressure conduit between intracranial dural sinuses and the vertebral venous system, a relationship that matters when you teach routes of infection or metastasis. Petroclival approaches and endoscopic endonasal work near the clivus demand respect for these venous channels, where bleeding can be diffuse and difficult to control. Small structure, big consequences. Use this rendering in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy courses to explain dural sinus topology, and in neurosurgical teaching files when outlining venous risk during clival and petroclival exposure. It also suits radiology and anatomy atlases as a companion to CT or MR venography discussions of inferior petrosal sinus catheterization and skull base venous variants.
